It was without question that having happened once it would continue to happen repeatedly. Again and then again.
But who imagined that it could occur 56 times in a period of only 10 years?
Ten years have passed, along with 55 PGA tour titles, since 1996 when Tiger Woods took his first TOUR title at the Las Vegas Invitational. To get his first win, the skinny newbe from Stanford California beat TOUR veteran Davis Love III in the playoffs.
Jim Furyk is going to try to make up for his unexpected playoff loss last year, to Wes Short, Jr.
What Furyk was planning to leave us was already beginning to grow well prior to that maiden professional victory, and it is till growing at an exponential pace today.
On the TOUR, Woods can be seen to have accomplished a six-event winning streak though, he will not be able to continue it for this week since he will not be attending. In 1997, Woods returned to Las Vegas with the intention of defending his title. Since, then, when he tied for 36th place, he hasn't been back except to practice, gamble or to be the host of Tiger Jam.
The lack of Tiger Woods is being received as good news by the other contenders who are scratching and clawing to compete for the 2007 trophy. Of the three full-field events that still remain on the’06 calendar, this is only one of them.
This year’s edition is being called the Frys.com Open. It is the 24th occurrence of this event and is offering a $4 million purse, $720,000 of which is being given to the overall champion.
While for most of its existence, it has contained 90 holes, this is the third year in which it will be held to 72 holes.
During the first couple of days, the Summerlin TPC will host the Canyons TPC.
